Devki Group CEO Raval Narendra.Eighteen employees of Devki Steel Mills Ltd were last week fired after what the Company described as a violation of the company’s rules and regulation. The management of the company however said they will only allow re-employ those that are willing to abide the company’s code of conduct.
Addressing journalist in Mombasa Company’s head of Human Resource James Kariuki said they
reached the decision after what had happened the previous day where the company’s General Manger Mr. Rakesh. B. Mangla was attacked by employees and detained for several hours before the police were called in to restore peace within the Company’s surroundings, he explained that the unlawful act by employees was tarnishing the Company’s image.
“We have decided to dismiss the 18 people but the rest never took part in demonstration should be allowed to resume their duties”, said Kariuki. The Company has about 170 employees, some
working as loaders and heaters who at the time of our arrival were locked out of the Company’s
premises. Mr Joseph Juma chief-steward told The Weekly Vision that the management had decided to pay off all the employees before being dismissed. Mr. Kariuki however, confirmed that out the resolutions they passed as management was to pay all employees and conduct a fresh recruitment for other employees. He added that Company will not tolerate any of the unlawful acts that possess threat to the entire organization.
“We cannot allow some to suffer for the mistakes made certain individuals, we also have the responsibility as a company to protect our employees”,he said.
The General Manger who was also present during the brief stated that the Company will however remain closed for some weeks before re-opening. He said the Company had incurred huge loses as a result of most metals being left unattended to. He said it was in the interest of the Company to address the grievances that were raised by the employees and put up better structures that will ensure that employees have good working conditions that were up to international standards “Our interest is to see high productions of our products as we continue working on the demands brought by them (employees) nobody will miss his payment”, said the GM. The GM added that the Company will not close down during recruitment period but will have little activities since the Company requires more manpower to drive multi-task machines, but confirmed that the exercise should be over in a weeks’ time before resuming full operation.
Mr. Kariuki also reiterated that it is normal for the Companies to have trade disputes and that was not exceptional and the culprits have to be dealt with accordance of the Companies rules, he however said they will only recruit employees with good reputation.
“Since what happened is an act of criminal activity, we will require people with referees to curb such kind of violence”, said Kariuki. On 5th of this month about 170 employees of the said Company boycotted work demanding the management to address their grievances which included a review of working hours, salary increment, removal of the Company’s General Manger and Human Resource Manager from the office stating that the Management had refused to give in to the demands raised by the district labor office. The GM was however, man-handled and beaten up by the employees before being rescued by the police, sources within the police informed us that they are still in pursuant of culprits.
