A senior Kenya bureau of standards official at the Busia County office, has cautioned women to stop the usage of harmful cosmetics which he said are being imported into Kenya from a neighboring country through Busia border via illegal entry points. The official Peter Bosire made the remark when he was addressing a cross border female traders’ forum that brought together participants from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda at a Busia Hotel recently. Bosire said the said cosmetics which include hydrophone and mercury contain chemical compounds which cause kidney failure after percolating into the blood stream. He said during the blood circulation the kidney does not get rid of the compounds from the body which are instead deposited in the kidney later leading to malfunctions. “While in the body the chemical compounds cause the skin pigment to lighten with the result that those affected do not heal after medical operation” said the Kebs official, adding that the utilization of the said chemicals has led to the development of caesarian cases. The officer said that Caro lights cream, Peau Claire cream and Maxi Claire cream were the most common at the border town. He revealed that he recently confiscated Caro light cream worth Sh. 370,000 from a business woman and burnt them but warned that court fines for those caught range between Sh.100, 000 up-to Sh.1 Million. Bosire urged the business fraternity in the county to beware such products as they accessed local markets through the porous border. He also contended that unscrupulous business people cashed in on the East African Community’s protocol that allowed free movement of goods to bring in the perfumes. Bosire further warned the business fraternity against trading in radio and torch batteries christened Tiger as they leaked upon expiry. The leaked substance, he noted, was corrosive.
