Expectant mothers in Embu County who visited some health facilities for routine medical checkups reportedly experienced harrowing treatment at the hands of healthcare staff at several facilities operated with the support of The National AIDS and STI's Control Programme (NASCOP).The healthcare scandal involves infants, one of whom passed on, according to the report seen by this writer. It all happened when clinicians at several heaths centres in the county failed to detect the HIV status of expectant mothers in time, in the confusion some mothers were declared HIV negative only to turn out positive soon after some had delivered.
This is according to a confidential NASCOP GF monthly report for January 2020. The report was prepared by Dr Rukiya Mohammed of NASCOP, it was titled ‘’Objectives To Evaluate Circumstances That Led To 6 Positive Infants In The Year 2019’’ The Weekly Vision online is in possession of the Memo.
The health centres are all in Embu County, they are Dallas Health Centre, Kithimu Health Centre, Nembure health Centre, Embu level 5, Kiamuringa Dispensary and Kieni Consolata Hospital.
The confidential memo came out soon after a three-day meeting was held at Pride Inn Mombasa and involved CASCOs, DMAs, all NASCOP staff. The main goal was to understand and track the progress of HIV programs towards ending the HIV epidemic for policy and programmatic action. Counties were divided into several clusters where they presented their data on HIV programming, they also developed work plans. Heath CS Mutahi Kagwe is busy fighting the COVID 19 pandemic, we would, however, plead with him to look afresh into the NASCOP scandal.
It is not clear now what measures have been put in place to make sure that the same does not happen in future
