Kisii Senator Chris Obure

Kisii Senator Chris Obure and two former Permanent Secretaries have been charged over the multi-billion shillings Anglo Leasing scandal that rocked the country more than ten years ago.
Obure who previously served as Finance Minister in former President Daniel arap Moi’s regime was charged alongside David Mwiraria as well as former Permanent Secretaries Dave Mwangi and Sammy Kyungu.
Others are David Onyonka who served as head of debt management at the Treasury as well as tycoon Deepak Kamani, his father Chamanlal Kamani, brother Rashmi and two companies associated with the scandal.
They have all denied abuse of office and conspiracy to commit economic crime charges, although Mwiraria and the Kamanis – who are represented by lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi – were not in court.
A lawyer representing Mwiraria has told the court that his client is admitted to the Karen hospital and wants him to plead for his charges on March 18.
Lawyer Abdullahi on his part said the Kamani are out of the country and were expected back later on Wednesday and will be ready to appear in court on Thursday.
Mr.Obure and his three co-accused were freed on a Sh5 million bond, and ordered to deposit their passports within 14 days.
