Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has reportedly bared officials from his office from placing advertisements on any of Radio Africa’s media platforms. Radio Africa runs the Star newspaper, Classic 105, Kiss 100, Radio Jambo, Kiss TV, East FM, XFM and Jambo Turkana radio. The governor was reportedly angered by a negative story carried in the paper a few weeks ago touching on his health.

The newspaper claimed that a judge had ruled governor Sonko was HIV positive and therefore deserved to be released three months prior to the completion of a one-year sentence. The governor has since rubbished the claim and threatened to sue.

But the biggest problem within Radio Africa Group and the Star newspaper in particular seems to lie with a few individual at the helm; chiefly head of content Paul Illado and photo editor Jack Owuor. The duo are said to be poor planners and as a result the paper is facing a myriad of problems. The paper has been going through tough times as a result of poor content and lack of leadership, according to sources within the group. The paper’s printed copy has plummeted in terms of numbers from a high of 10,000 copies being printed in a day when it started off to a mere 4,000 copies presently.

The paper has also been experiencing cash flow problems and has been unable to meet some of its obligations to staff members. The strain on its cash flow has forced those in charge of running the group to delay paying staff salaries on time. The situation worsened last year when collections from advertisements were not good enough to cover its payroll and other operational expenses, forcing it to pay in batches.
Female employees and especially interns have in the past complained of being sexually harassed by their seniors but no one seems to have taken any action to stop the vise.
