Crucial documents destroyed by fire at the Busia finance offices |
A suspicious fire
incident has destroyed crucial documents and property at Busia County finance
offices. The fire incident was confirmed by Busia County Communications
Director Winnstone Mbada. “The situation has been controlled. We are working
closely with relevant authorities to establish the cause of the fire,” said Mr
Mbada.
The incident
elicited angry reactions from members of the public who accused county
officials of setting the offices on fire in a bid to dodge audit queries.
County Governor
Sospeter Ojaamong was arrested in 2018 and is currently in court facing
multiple corruption charges. Director of
Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji laid the charges following a probe into
the government's alleged loss of nearly $80,000 of public funds to a German
company for waste management services.
Other charges
include conspiring to commit an offence of economic crime, abuse of office,
engagement in a project without proper planning and willful failure to comply
with the law relating to the management of funds.
