The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has called on the electorate to elect sober leadership in the country for it to have a good direction for the youth. Bishop Joseph Obanyi Sagwe spoke while holding Youth of the Light Mass at St. Teresa Malava parish bringing together young people from Catholic Church deaneries within the county. He said it was time young people were allowed to express themselves through the church and the country’s leadership.

Sagwe observed that some of the leaders who have availed themselves for election in the country were of bad influence on the young people, some of them have already been voted into office.

Unfortunately, some of our leaders have ‘captured’ and infiltrated the minds of these young people by glorifying the use of some substances and other unusual vices, through that, they have been able to amass votes in their favour if as a country we will allow such leaders to sell their weird and scary manifestos to our youngsters, then this country will be a banana republic, let us be realistic and sober up in our endeavours and not capitalize on the numbers of our youths to ascend to power”.

Addressing over 2,000 youths, the clergyman called on the church and country leadership to show the best direction to the young generation if Kenyans expect to have a better and prosperous country in the future.

Sagwe further expressed his dismay in the manner teen pregnancies has taken root in both Kakamega and Vihiga counties with very little being done to curb the vice.

“We have been rated as the leading in early pregnancies and it zeroes down to us as a church, noting that the Catholic Church is the most popular in the regions and hence it indicates that it has failed to execute its mandate respectively, let us as a church be on the forefront of addressing issues that affect our youths and be able to accommodate them fully in our churches through programmes that will also educate and enlighten them to their satisfaction instead of locking them out of many church activities making them be idle and feel out of place, let those who have the talent to preach or sing be given a chance as this youngster when out of school have a lot of energy to burn and they can use it positively in the church various activities or at home also.”

He later showed concerns about the number of teen pregnancies who return to school after delivering and called on parents and other stakeholders to unite and ensure that these girls are absorbed fully to complete their education.

Sagwe also called on the ministry of education to ensure the safety of the children before opening schools next week owing to the ongoing vote counting process.

“We as the church are advocating for peace throughout the process and let the winners and losers embrace the rule of law and let life continue especially for the young ones who need education, we pray that by Monday we will have known the winners and losers and have a smooth transition to let each Kenyan go back to his her duties peacefully.”
