CLASHES AT REA BOARD MEETING IN MOMBASA AS CHAIRMAN PUSHES FOR ILLEGAL PAYMENTS

It is being alleged by a section of those attending the meeting that board chairman Mr. Simon Gicharu has had a serious disagreement with the financial director over the idea of settling questionable payments dating back some years ago when he first assumed office as chairman.

Mr. Simon Gicharu
The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) board meeting currently taking place in the port city of Mombasa with the aim of reviewing and deliberating on their new mandate controversially handed to them a few weeks ago by CS energy was nearly thrown into a spin early on when a disagreement occurred between the chairman and his financial director. The meeting which kicked off last Friday is expected to come to a conclusion after one week.

This is the board’s first meeting out of Nairobi after their terms in office were extended by the minister of energy. It is however the ongoing pull and push among the board members at the meeting which is likely to leave a lasting impression. The silent unrest is between those who want to maintain the status quo against those that want to portray themselves as reformists.

It is being alleged by a section of those attending the meeting that board chairman Mr. Simon Gicharu has had a serious disagreement with the financial director over the idea of settling questionable payments dating back some years ago when he first assumed office as chairman, some of the questionable invoices are subjects of investigations by the Ethics and Anti-corruption commission.

The financial director has declined the push by the chairman to pay for goods allegedly supplied to REA by shadowy suppliers; he reckons that there are no indication that the goods were ever supplied as alleged since there isn’t any paper trail to back up the claims by the said suppliers who seem to have the full backings of the chairman. Some people at the meeting say that the fear of prosecution has made them scared of making the payments.

It has to be remembered that in September of last year 2018, the chairman himself  and 12 others were summoned to appear before EACC investigators Anderson Weru and Samuel Kimani “for interview and statement recording” over the loss of billions of shillings the parastatal that happened under his watch.
