Photo journalist Collins Kweyu narrowly escaped suffering serious injury
when he was assaulted by Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko just outside
the Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) offices at Integrity Centre.
Governor Sonko was accompanied to Integrity Centre by a group of unruly youths
who chanted praises in support. Sonko had been summoned to appear
before officers at Integrity Center to help shed more light on a self-declaration form
submitted to EACC in 2017 while vying for governorship.
Interestingly it is Mr. Kweyu who suffered the most from teargas fumes emanating
from canisters the police had lobbed at the Governor’s group in an attempt to
disperse them. Besides Collins Kweyu, others were Steve Shitera (Citizen Tv)
Jeff Angote (Nation Tv) and Joseph Wakhungu (Milele fm)
The governor is said to have been convicted 1988 and fined Sh200, 000 or
in default serve six months in prison.
The Media Council has issued a media alert dated 5th Nov.
bitterly complaining of the harassment directed at the journalists who were
simply carrying out their duties. Mr. Kweyu also reported the matter to
Kilimani police station.
