The newly launched Defence Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited (DESACCO) has put the decade’s old mantra within the Sacco industry of the freedom to be a member of one’s choice and free to exit to serious test after it emerged that the military high command is forcing members of the armed forces to join or  face an explained consequences.

The Weekly Vision online has learnt from a source within (DESACCO) that promotions, foreign and internal travels are now being directly pegged to ones membership of the new outfit. The order to forcefully recruit members of the armed forces into the new Sacco is said to have been communicated to the military men and women by non-other than Assistant Chief of Defence Forces, Personnel and Logistics Major General Fatumah Ahmed.

The same source confided in us how similar tactics at play now, led to Ulinzi Sacco’s collapse the early nineties. If the order to forcefully recruit is no rescinded then I fear (DESACCO) is likely to face the same fate as Ulinzi. Sacco membership is supposed to be voluntary as it has always been. Military personnel hold membership in various Saccos, Harambee Sacco, Muhasibu Sacco, Stima Sacco, Mwalimu Sacco and Metropolitan Sacco respectively.
