Bungoma County Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga was on Thursday attacked by alleged hired goons in Sirisia. It is said that the lawmaker was issuing cheques to several women groups when the incident occurred.
The lawmaker told The Weekly Vision that the exercise had just ended; it is then that she decided to make a stop at the home of one of the beneficiaries when all hell broke loose. A group of youth riding on several motorbikes attacked the home with blunt objects and stones, injuring at least six people in the process while two vehicles belonging to the MP were vandalized.
"I condemn the heinous and barbaric act against us by our competitors; the incident is a show of cowardice and inferiority on their part. My team was attacked and cars stoned at Butunde village, Namwela Ward in Sirisia during my empowerment programme. We shall not buy fear from them. Tupatane kwa ground, she said, the goons are well known and their financiers too. I call upon government investigative agencies to move with speed and bring them to book," Wambilianga said.
Wambilianga asked investigating bodies to intervene and identify a politician who is behind the evil act, adding that IEBC gave each aspirant the mandate to campaign everywhere. Wambilianga said that out of the six-woman injured, one was in serious condition but she is receiving medical attention at a private health facility in Bungoma town.
Namwela Ward MCA Charles Nangulu, who had accompanied Wambilianga, has pointed an accusing finger at an area MP John Waluke whom he says has been threatening those with divergent opinions.
Sirisia sub-County Police Commander David Kandie, confirming the incident, said that investigations have been launched, assuring the people that the perpetrators will be brought to book. This came barely a day after Bungoma County returning office Grace Rono said that IEBC will deal with those who defy election rules and regulations. "Election will only be a one-day exercise, please let us maintain peace and vote for your favourite candidates, sit back at home and wait for the results from the IEBC," she noted.
