Some residents in Mombasa County have lauded efforts by the police in curbing crime, following the wednesday morning incident when officers from the flying squad unit shot and killed suspected robbers in Changamwe who had stopped at a petrol station.
Mr. Abubakar Kibwana a resident of Migadini says at least the police are working and everyone is alert since crimes in the County have increased of late.
The three robbers who were in a saloon car went to the Shell Petrol station and asked for services before the officers ambushed them and ordered them to lie down.
Witness said the officers who were in plain clothes searched the men’s car and found two AK-47 riffles, 62 rounds of ammunition and three magazines wrapped in a shirt and trousers at the back seat before they shot and killed them on the spot.
“They arrived in a car and asked me to sell them fuel worth Sh. 500. As I started filling the tank, they suddenly told me to move a side if I valued my life, I thank God the police arrived in time and killed them all,” said a pump attendant.
Police said they had prior information of the robbers that they had planned to rob the petrol station.
“They pretended to be purchasing fuel since they had pushed it from the road, but our officers accosted them before they could be ready, and killed them,” Seyelino Kubai, Mombasa County deputy commandant, told The Weekly Vision online at the scene.
Bullet-riddled bodies of the suspects lay in a pool of blood for hours and were later transferred to the Coast general hospital morgue.By G. Alex Peters in Mombasa
