Underground
and often illegal gas re-filling stations have set up base in Kenya especially
in Nairobi’s industrial area. The re-fillers are making huge sums of money,
selling half re-filled gas cylinders that have now become a danger to
consumers.
In the mix

has roped in retailers especially supermarkets that boost their presence in
informal settlement areas such as Kangemi, Kawangware and Dandora.
Re-fillers
fill up any type of cylinder, be it Total or K-gas their motivation is money
not safety, an insider at one of the supermarkets told us.
Most of the
gas cylinders sold in these areas are sourced from unscrupulous suppliers who
seem to operate with impunity and with the full knowledge of security agencies.
The Weekly Vision team has in the last few weeks been
trailing a delivery track from a go-down within industrial area make delivery
of gas cylinders to Waiyaki Way supermarket in Kawangware. They have stores in
Kawangware and Kangemi.
Victims from
around Uthuru area narrated to us the agonizing incidents that have left they
and loved ones nursing serious burns after gas cylinders blew up on them. One
sad incident involved a Nairobi University final year engineering student who
died two months ago as result of a faulty gas cylinder. The student was later laid
to rest in Nyandaru County.
