BUSIA COUNTY OFFICIAL DEMAND BRIBES TO FIGHT CORONAVIRUS.

Busia County is among those identified by the government in Nairobi as high risk, others counties identified as such include Kisumu, Migori, Kajiado, Wajir, and Garissa for their proximity to international borders.

A senior Busia County government official is in the eye of a storm after he was seen moving around market centers within the county demanding illegal fees from business people in order to fumigate their premises to minimize the spread of corona virus, this is even after the county government declared that they had allocated close to ksh.100m to deal with the pandemic.

According to a trader who sought to remain anonymous, the official (name withheld for legal reasons) has been moving from shop to shop demanding for the fumigation fee ranging from ksh.3k to 10k claiming that the money is to be used in buying lunch for the fumigators. This has irked locals who are demanding for an explanation from the County government.

Busia County is among those identified by the government in Nairobi as high risk, others counties identified as such include Kisumu, Migori, Kajiado, Wajir, and Garissa for their proximity to international borders. Nairobi is also included in the high risk areas due to its being the region’s biggest commercial hub and hosting the biggest port of entry at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Mombasa and Kilifi were identified because they are seaport counties.
